Tungurahua Province

( Unidad Intercultural )

Tungurahua is named after the volcanic province in the central Andean highlands of Ecuador. At 2900 km ² there are about 504 580 people. Provincial capital is Ambato. Another important especially for tourism town of Baños. In addition to the Tungurahua lies with the Carihuairazo yet another five thousand in Tungurahua. From north to south the Panamerican Highway traverses the province.

Geography

Tunguarahua is situated almost exactly in the middle of Ecuador. In the northwest Tungurahua borders the province of Cotopaxi, on the northeast by Napo and Pastaza in the east. In the southwest Tungurahua borders Morona Santiago, on the south by the province of Chimborazo and to the west by Bolivar. In the outer east of the province, the boundary between the Andes and the Amazon basin. With an area of almost 3,000 square kilometers Tungurahua is the smallest of the Ecuadorian provinces.

History

By the law of the territorial division (Spanish Ley de División territorial ) of Greater Colombia on 25 June 1824, the Canton Ambato founded the Departamento de Quito as a subunit of the province of Chimborazo. In 1860, the provisional government of Quito taught under Gabriel García Moreno, a province Ambato, which was renamed in 1861 in the province of Tungurahua.

Policy

Prefect of the province is Fernando Naranjo, the 2004 for a Unidad Intercultural ( Engl. "Intercultural Unit" ) called electoral alliance of the Social Democratic Izquierda Democrática, the Indigenabewegung Pachakutik and the political movement Frente Civico Nuevo País (FC- NP) has been selected. For the same electoral alliance was also the mayor of the capital city of Ambato, Fernando Callejas selected.
