The PCT was founded in 1934 when the Tunisian Federation of the French Communist Party was transformed into an independent organization. The Tunisian Communist Party was banned by the Vichy regime in 1939, but in 1943 it was the party allowed again to operate legally. From 1946 Mohamed Nafaa was the Secretary General of the Tunisian Communist Party. This office he held until 1981, when Mohamed Harmel took the lead. However, the party was banned again in 1962 and 1981 only permitted again. On 23 April 1993, the PCT was dissolved and converted into the Ettajdid Movement, a non-communist Left Party.
