Tunisian Railways

The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Tunisiens ( SNCFT ) or للسكك الحديدية التونسية is the state railway of Tunisia, founded after independence in 1956. The SNCFT operates the mainline, metro and freight by rail and the capital, Tunis, a part of the suburban. 2007 promoted the SNCFT 40 million passengers and 11 million tons of cargo.

History

The SNCFT was founded on December 27, 1956 by decree to manage the northern part of the national rail network. The southern part of the network, in particular the route Sfax - Gafsa - Métlaoui and the routes in the mining triangle remained in possession of the Compagnie des phosphates et des chemins de fer de Sfax - Gafsa, who had received a concession for this network in 1897. When that expired on 31 December 1966, this network fell by the Tunisian State on 1 January 1967 also transferred the routes of SNCFT so that the SNCFT is owned by the almost complete national rail infrastructure since 1967. Only the Métro Léger de Tunis, and the rail line from Tunis to La Marsa are not operated by the SNCFT, but by the Société des transports de Tunis.

Organization

The SNCFT under the supervision of the Minister of Transport. It has its headquarters in Tunis. It is a legal person, financially autonomous and merchant in terms of commercial law. She has to run the task the regional rail and long-distance passenger and rail freight in Tunisia. She has the safety of railway operations, ensuring the quality of the offer and its reliability.

President of the SNCFT is currently Abdelaziz Chaâbane. 2007 employed the SNCFT 4871 employees.

Vehicle inventory

For fleet of SNCFT include 172 diesel locomotives, 15 diesel railcars and six EMUs, 274 passenger coaches (including DMUs ), 3916 and 1580 freight car container. The vehicles of the SNCFT come mainly from the USA or Canada.

Operation

Passenger

The SNCFT not operates its routes to the beat traffic. On the main routes but several pairs of trains run daily, on branch lines partially but only one train per day. The most important railway junction is the station of Tunis. There are three different classes of cars: The "grand confort " class is the most tender. Then there are the 1st and 2nd class, with the suburban trains in Tunis perform only the latter two classes of cars. As a premium offer, the air-conditioned express trains Direct Climatisé apply. On the tourist market of Lézard Rouge ( Red Lizard ) is aligned, which runs on meter gauge of Métlaoui after Seldja. The SNCFT operates this train with historic cars of the court train of the Bey of Tunis. Freight traffic

The freight of SNCFT consists of about 75 % of phosphate transport. In addition, the iron transport is important. The main freight axis is the distance from Gafsa to the port of Sfax, where the goods are loaded onto ships. The SNCFT operates 2167 km route, of which:

  • 471 km standard gauge;
  • 1688 km meter gauge, of which 65 km are electrified,
  • 8 km double track and

267 stations and stops.

  • Ligne du Nord: Tunis - Bizerte Mateur -
  • Ligne Beja Mateur - Tabarka
  • Ligne International: Tunis - Beja - Ghardimaou (border) Souk Ahras (Algeria)

Meter gauge

  • Ligne du Cap Bon: Bir Bou Regba - Hammamet- Nabeul
  • Ligne de la Côte Tunis - Sousse - Sfax
  • Ligne du Centre: Sousse - Kasserine
  • Ligne du Grand Sud: Sfax Sfax - Gabès - Tozeur and

The main meter gauge route of the SNCFT is the Ligne de la Côte, which connects Tunis with Sfax. It is also the fastest traveled a meter gauge line world.

Future Plans

An extension of the SNCFT route network is currently planned in southeastern Tunisia. Libya is building a standard gauge route along the Mediterranean, which will connect Libya in the east to the Egyptian railway network. These courses should be continued on the Libyan- Tunisian border at Ras Ejder to the Tunisian Gabes, where the standard gauge line will connect to the Tunisian meter gauge network.
