The Tuolumne County has a county located in the state of California, United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sonora, the only city in the county.

Geography

The county has an area of ​​5891 square kilometers, of which 101 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Alpine County, Calaveras County, Stanislaus County, Mariposa County, Madera County and Mono County. The northern half of Yosemite National Park is located in the eastern part of the county.

History

Tuolumne County in 1850 was one of the Gründungscountys of California. Parts of it were ceded to Stanislaus County in 1854 and 1864 in Alpine County.

The name Tuolumne is of indigenous origin and has different meanings, such as many stone houses, or the land of mountain lions.
