Tuonela

Tuonela (also Tuoni, Manala or mana ) is the realm of the dead or the Underworld in Finnish mythology. In Tuonela Tuoni and Tuonetar govern with the support of Kalma. The river of Tuonela is guarded by Surma.

Tuonela is known from the Finnish national epic Kalevala. In the 16th song of the Kalevala, Väinämöinen travels alive to Tuonela to find spells.

Tuonela is used as a translation for the Greek word Aδης ( Hades ) in the Finnish translation of the Bible. In Christianity Tuonela is often interpreted as a resting place before the Last Judgment.
