Turba

Turba (Latin for " crowd ", " mob ", but also " the fray ", " the hustle ", " noise ", pl. Turbae ) is the technical term for choirs, which are in passions, oratorios and other sacred music works Groups of People who are directly involved in the action, as opposed to the choruses that reflect the action or comment. They complement beyond the Soliloquenten that represent individual performer of the respective stories.

Heinrich Schütz is for example in his St. Matthew Passion following groups Turba choruses together:

  • The disciples of Jesus
  • The whole crowd
  • High Priest
  • High priests, scribes and elders
  • High priests and Pharisees
  • Jews and soldiers
  • Captain together with the soldiers

Similarly, the Turba choruses are found in the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach in different scenes. Make disciples of Jesus, the Jewish people or the soldiers dar. part way into the passions achieved through the use of the excited masses a strong dramaturgy that is to gentleness of Jesus in a harsh contrast.
