Turceni

Turceni is a town in Gorj County in Romania.

Location

Turceni is located in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians, at the mouth of the river jilt in the Jiu ( Shield ). The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 40 km north.

History

A settlement at the site of the present city named Câmpul Turcilor (such as " Turks field") is a document to prove since 1499; the first mention of the name Turceni was 1529th A year later, the Wallachian prince Vlad Înecatul confirmed to the monastery Tismana dominion over Turceni. 1569 is documented in an upper and a lower part of a division of the place; two noble families became owners of Turceni. 1634 was the monastery Tismana again rule over the entire village.

Population

Turceni is located on the railway line opened in 1967 from Filiaşi after Târgu Jiu. In both directions currently operate (2009) daily about seven per commuter trains. In addition, bus services after Motru.
