Turenne, Corrèze

Turenne is a commune with 781 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Corrèze in the Limousin region on the western edge of the Massif Central. It belongs to the district Brive- la -Gaillarde and Canton Meyssac.

Turenne is classified as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

Geography

The village is located 15 kilometers south of Brive- la -Gaillarde in the département road D 8, in the valley of the river tourmente. Northeast of the present-day village core there is a hill with the largely preserved buildings of the medieval fortress.

In the southeast, in the district Turenne Gare, is the railway station of the municipality on the railway line from Brive- la- Gaillarde to Figeac.

Attractions

  • Mediaeval buildings, including the Watchtower La tour César from the 7th century and the ruins of Turenne, have been preserved. The large clock dates from the 9th century.
  • The village church is dated to the 17th century.
  • An altarpiece in the church also dates from the 17th century.
