Turk Broda

Walter Edward " Turk " Broda ( born May 15, 1914 in Brandon, Manitoba, † October 17, 1972 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender and coach, who played from 1936 to 1952 for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League.

Career

Toronto general manager Conn Smythe committed in 1936 for the record sum of $ 8,000 to 22 -year-old Turk Broda of the Detroit Olympics of the International Hockey League. His time with the Leafs was only interrupted by two years of war service. In the regular season Broda was a great support for Toronto, which 62 shutouts prove, but its strongest time he had in the play-offs. With 13 playoff shutouts and a 1.98 Gegentorschnitt he helped the Leafs to five Stanley Cup wins. After ending his playing career Broda worked in the role of head coach. 1955 and 1956 he won with the Toronto Marlboros of the Ontario Hockey Association the Memorial Cup. Later, the Canadians stood among others at the London Nationals from the OHA behind the gang.

In 1967 he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
