Turkish Cypriots

As Turkish Cypriots and Cyprus Turks, Turkish Kıbrıs Türkleri, Turkish-speaking inhabitants of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus are referred to. Today they live mostly in the north of the island in the area of ​​( internationally recognized only by Turkey ) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, where they form about 99 % of the population.

The term Turkish Cypriots is also used for the Cyprus-born Turks, to distinguish them from immigrating after the partition of the island in 1974 from the Turkish mainland and especially Turks from Anatolia.

Today the number of Turkish Cypriots estimated to be about 447,000: 200,000 in the United Kingdom, about 150,000 in Cyprus, 50,000 in Australia, 10,000 in North America, 2,000 in Southern Cyprus and another 8,000 in other countries.

Occasionally, the Turkish Cypriots were, however, the Greek Cypriots called Cypriots, Cypriots as before; today is generally the name Cypriots common to both ethnic groups.
