Turkmen alphabet

The Turkmen alphabet is the alphabet of the Turkmen language. In Turkmenistan today is only the Latin alphabet officially valid.

History

The Turkmen received late in a written language. Previously served on the regional transport languages ​​like Tschagataische as a written language. Only in the 18th century was the Turkmen language has its own alphabet based on the Arabic script.

When the Soviet Union was, a Latin alphabet was developed for the first Turkmen 1926. Eleven years later, it was then, as all the alphabets of the Turkic languages ​​on the territory of the Soviet Union, replaced by a system based on the Cyrillic alphabet. This alphabet had 1991 stock until independence.

After Turkmenistan became independent, led to a new, based on the Latin alphabet. This differs markedly from the alphabet of the neighboring Uzbeks or the alphabet of the Turkish language and uses symbols that are not used by other Turkic peoples, such as the Ň or Ý. Only in Afghanistan, the Arabic alphabet is used sporadically.
