Turn-based strategy

Turn-based strategy games (English turn-based strategy, abbreviated TBS or German RBS) are games in which players' actions are carried out in single rounds. This may mean

  • That the players make their moves alternately or sequentially plan and execute, such as chess,
  • Or that they are planning their trains around the same time as the trains and then be run simultaneously or at least not in order of play. This is for example the board game Diplomacy and partly role-play the case.

Turn-based strategy games is mainly characterized in that the players between rounds have enough time to plan their moves carefully. Spreads are therefore post games or e- mail games, which can drag for example in the case of chess for months. Representative of turn-based strategy games are mostly board games and tabletop games, but also various types of computer strategy games. Examples are Battle for Wesnoth, Battle Isle, Heroes of Might and Magic, Jagged Alliance, Civilization or Total War.

Latter are faced with the real-time strategy games where continues the playing time during the strategic planning. There are now much more common real-time strategy games to be found as a turn-based strategy games, since the computational complexity of such games for current computer is no longer a problem. Also, for the development firms real-time strategy games more lucrative: Players who play turn-based strategy games, one game remain true for a long time, while players who play real-time strategy games much more inclined to purchase new games. This can be explained, among other things, that it is much more common is graphically beautiful games shown in real-time strategy games and this will very quickly improve through technical progress. The individual missions in these games are much faster, usually play through in one to two hours while are considered to be minimum at the turn-based games by the longer strategic planning two hours.
