Turnbuckle

A tension screw is a double screw with a right - and a left-hand thread that holds together two components with corresponding internal threads by tensile stress. By rotation in one direction or the other tightens the screw or loosen the connection. The twin screw has to cross in the middle of a hole or a hexagon.

Running as a yoke-shaped double - nut is also called turnbuckle or hook clamp. These include two different eyelets or hook screws with right or left - hand thread.

With means (for example an iron rod, which is inserted into the tensioning screw ) depending on the thread size and pitch of many tons of tensile force can be produced.

Uses

Very often turnbuckles and bolts used to tighten the ropes or wires taut ( suspension bridges, wire fences ). Furthermore, can be anchored and held also ceiling structures because of the variability of the tensioner. Besides, many clamping elements have to be set to the same voltage.

Clamping elements allow the Verspannnen of chains for securing loads in transportation ( lashing, lashing ) often using a built-in ratchet to which a steel tube lever is pushed.

On sailing yachts turnbuckles are used for voltage of a wire railing. Turnbuckles (referred to as rigging screws ) are used to adjust the tension of standing rigging.

Clamping screws are used on machines often for setting a game, a stroke or a spring force. You are to often provided with lock nuts.

The variability is that it is possible to readjust in constructions with a plurality of cables or tie rods, the tension of each clamping bolt, and thus correct.

In the steel construction practice clamping screws are often used to millimeter precision to adjust components to each other in position. To this end, the adjusting elements are temporarily welded to the to move components. The components may then be positioned apart or together by screws. A reversal of the direction of motion causes backlash and hysteresis. After fixing in position - usually by screws, rivets or a Vollverschweißung - can the clamping screws are removed.

Also used in furniture construction for connecting two parts of a box or a countertop. In the timber as adjustable clamping connection with a glue binder (wood beams).

For the simple coupling of rail cars to locomotive and another just loose in shunting and clamped against the buffer when driving. ( See picture)

For details on size and strength can be found in several standards, including DIN 1478.
