Turner Contemporary

The Turner Contemporary is an account opened in April 2011, newly built art museum in Margate, Kent, England. Its name refers to the English painter JMW Turner who went to school in Margate and the city and the Thames estuary up to its end of life regularly visited.

Architectural History

The museum was announced in an architectural competition in 2001. The first prize went to Snøhetta, a Norwegian architectural firm. Because of the enormous costs waived the city Margate on a version of the design. Since 2006, an altered, reduced building was designed by the English architect David Chipperfield. Construction began in 2008 and was completed in 2011 at a cost of 17.5 million pounds sterling. The construction costs were applied by local and regional resources and the European Union, the plot presented the Thanet District Council are available. The Margate -born English Künstlerien Tracey Emin supported the project and the museum opened.
