Turnhout [ tɵrnhɑʊ̯t ] ( province of Antwerp ) is a town in Kempen, a landscape in the north of Belgium. It is conveniently located on the European road 34 between the ports of Antwerp and Duisburg.

History

At the site of the castle of the Dukes of Brabant developed in the Middle Ages, first village structures, which received the city status later, the so-called "City and Freedom" (city end Vrijheit ). During the Middle Ages, Turnhout continuously developed into an important trade and craft center. In particular, the cloth trade and the Zwillichweberei were common occupations in the city. Several centuries flourished these businesses until Philippus Jacobus Brepols in the 19th century settled in the paper industry in the city and was the largest employer.

In 1597, Maurice of Orange defeated the Spaniards at the Battle of Turnhout, thus contributing to the liberation of the seven provinces.

Economy

Turnhout is a center of the graphic arts industry today. In the city the Flemish Innovation Center is home to the graphic arts industry. The city is also known for the production of playing cards.
