Turnov

Turnov ( German: Turnau ) is a city in the Czech Republic. In the south and north-east it borders the conservation area Cesky Raj ( Bohemian Paradise ). The city has 14,447 inhabitants ( 2005).

History

The city was founded in 1272 by Jaroslav Havel and of Markvartice on a rock ledge above the Iser. Later on, the rule was passed on to the important Bohemian noble family von Wartenberg, who followed the family Smiřický of Smiřice. In 1468 Turnov was sacked by Lusatian crusaders; 1643 Swedish troops lit the city. In 1707 a fire threatened the city. In 1884 the first European technical school was established for the processing of precious stones, metals and jewelry production.

Since the 16th century worked here several cutting workshops in which imported and national precious stones were ground and processed. At least since the 18th century, the stones were exported all over the world. In the 17th century, the first glass factories in which imitations were made ​​of precious stones from glass originated. Since the beginning of the 18th century is Turnov center of jewelry manufacturing, the gem industry and the glass, polygraphy and machine production. Today Turnov is a tourist center in the Bohemian Paradise.
