Turpan Depression
The Turpan Depression (or Turfan Depression吐鲁番 盆地Chinese, Pinyin Turpan Pendi; Uighur: تۇرپان ئويمانليغى, Turpan Oymanliƣi ) is a depression in eastern Xinjiang, an autonomous region in northwestern China ( Asia).
Geography
The basin-like Turpan Valley is located in the U-shaped foothills of the eastern Tian Shan - namely between the actual Tian Shan in the west, the Bogda Shan in the north and in the south Kurutag. To the east, the landscape opens to some remote Gobi desert. Behind the northern mountains spreads out the great basin Dzungaria, beyond the southern mountains, the Tarim Basin. The most important tributary of the endorheic basin is Ala, which flows from the west in the valley.
Third deepest depression of the earth
At the lowest point, about 150 km southeast of the provincial capital of Urumqi is located in the center of about 50,000 km ² Turpan Depression on Aydingkol Lake, the terrain drops off along the lake at 155 m below sea level. Thus, it is after the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee is the third deepest depression of the earth that could be visited already in pre-industrial times with dry feet. This rank was taken in the twentieth century by the Rhenish lignite opencast mines. The second- lowest point is now in Germany (about 290m below sea level ) in the Hambach mine.
Geology
