Turtle Bay, Manhattan

Turtle Bay is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, USA.

Location

The neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan extends between the 43rd and 53rd Street and east of Lexington Avenue to the East River on the Roosevelt Iceland. In this district the headquarters of the United Nations and the Chrysler Building are.

History

Turtle Bay got its name in the 17th century. It provided shelter for the harsh weather on the East River. It became a center of shipbuilding. The Dutch governor of New Amsterdam was 1639 English this piece of land and called it " Turtle Bay Farm ". The U.S. Army taught here a convening an office during the Civil War. 1863 burned an angry mob during the Draft Riots New York leaving office. After this war, was built with the material Brownstone. 1868 was Turtle Bay location of breweries, slaughterhouses, coal camps. Due to the influx of poor immigrants the quarter fell slowly. In the 1920s, a power plant was built in Charlotte Hunnewell Sorchan created in the 1920s and 1930s, the Turtle Bay Gardens. Famous inhabitants of the district were Katharine Hepburn, June Havoc, Ricardo Montalban and Tyrone Power in 1966 received the title of these areas Turtle Bay Gardens Historic District. Between 1928-1930, the Chrysler Building, one of New York City landmark was born. 1948 slaughter houses were demolished to make way for the construction of the UN headquarters. This was completed in 1952.

Turtle Bay Association

The Turtle Bay Association was founded in 1957 to represent the interests of the district.

Economy

Fujitsu, Avianca, Ethiopian Airlines and Delta Air Lines are represented by office buildings in Turtle Bay. Since 1975, Transworld Airlinessein has headquarters in Turtle Bay.
