Tuscan wine#Super Tuscans

Super Tuscans are Italian red wines that are not manufactured according to traditional, formerly protected by the Italian wine law rules of assemblage and of removal. Nowadays, the term stands for traditional as well as fashionable designer wines that claim to be, far to lie about the quality of the Appelationsdurchschnittes.

Development

Previously, there was in Italy a wine law, which, for example, dictated a certain amount of white wines, Trebbiano and Malvasia. In contrast, rebelled winemakers and left in order to circumvent some absurdities occur. They experimented with grape varieties that were forbidden at DOC wines - such as Cabernet Sauvignon - and the equally forbidden aging in new oak barrels. They categorized their products as simple Vini da Tavola ( table wine ), gave them fancy names - and demanded absurdly high prices.

The first of these winemakers who brought in 1970 such a Tuscan red wine on the market, was Marchese Piero from Santa Cristina in Val di Pesa. The Year 1971 was the first single from his position Tignanello, which was not declared as Chianti Classico and the 1975 vintage of the first to be produced entirely with no white grapes. He was the first to shares of non-traditional grape varieties, namely Cabernet grapes, and the first, matured in oak barrels.

Because these wines did not conform to the rules of the consortium, the winery took them as Vini da Tavola - not as Chianti classico - on the market and put instead in the single vineyard designation Tignanello in capital letters on the label. The success was sensational. In the U.S., the wine was celebrated as Supertuscan, from which soon the German designation was Super Tuscans.

In addition, Antinori could sell this wine more expensive by a multiple than its Chianti classico. The now legendary Tignanello has become a model for a whole range of other Super Tuscans that are now being produced across the region. The most famous and most expensive in addition to Tignanello Solaia, Sassicaia, Solengo, Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso and Masseto.
