Tuscarora people

The Tuscarora ( Skarohreh ) are a Native American people of North America today about 1000 members. Reserves exist in Ontario, Canada ( Six Nations Reserve ) and in the USA in the State of New York ( Tuscarora Indian Reservation in Niagara County) and in North Carolina.

The language of the Tuscarora among the Iroquois languages ​​and is now almost extinct. In North Carolina, the language is passed on in schools to children.

History

The original settlement area of ​​the Tuscarora was probably along the St. Lawrence River, near the other nations of the Iroquois Confederation. However, this region they left in the direction of North Carolina. They returned in 1722, after losing the Tuscarora War, to the north, where they were received by the Oneida and Cayuga as the sixth nation in the Iroquois Confederacy. Since then, we speak of the Six Nations in place of the original Five Nations ( Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Onodowohgah ( Seneca ) and Mohawk ).
