Tutuila

Tutuila (old name: Tienhoven ) is a volcanic island and with 135 square kilometers, the largest island in the territory of American Samoa. On it is the capital of American Samoa, Pago Pago.

2010 53,400 people were living on Tutuila. Main sources of income are the Kopragewinnung, the fishing industry and craft products. The highest point is the 653 m high Matafao. To the east of Tutuila is the island Aunuu.

The island was discovered in 1722 by Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen for Europe. He gave her the name " Tienhoven " after his escort ship Tienhoven.

On September 29, 2009, approximately 200 kilometers south of an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale that triggered a tsunami occurred. Large parts of the south coast were flooded, about 30 people were killed and heavy damage to property was caused. The tsunami warning service in the South Pacific had issued a warning via SMS, the tidal wave was, however, accrued after 15-20 minutes, so that many people no longer could get to safety.
