TuxGuitar

TuxGuitar is a free music notation and sequencing software for creating and viewing of tablatures. The program is written in Java and distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License. It is similar in many respects to the commercial tablature editor Guitar Pro.

TuxGuitar is for the operating systems GNU / Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Windows, and as source code. In many Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu and Debian, TuxGuitar is included in the repositories. The first version of TuxGuitar was published on 22 December 2005. There are now localizations of the program in various languages.

With TuxGuitar live, there is also an implementation as a Java applet that can be used without installation directly in the browser.

Functions

The program shall allow guitarists and other musicians to record individual pieces to manage and play. The pieces can be displayed as music notation either in the form of tablature or. It is suitable for composing music as well as an exercise program for guitarists, as they can play while playing the pieces. For this purpose there is a possibility to adjust the playback speed and can run along a metronome during playback. In addition, the program includes an editor for chords and an editor for Drum Patterns A function to display the played notes on a fretboard or a keyboard makes it easier to find the right grip positions. Here various scales can be shown in addition.

It supports multiple tracks for different instruments that can be played back simultaneously. The play takes place via a built-in MIDI sequencer; for the sound reproduction is either an internal or an external software synthesizer such as Timidity or FluidSynth used, the direct use of a MIDI sound card is possible. The available tools are limited by the method used. By using MIDI hardware or software synthesizers and custom SoundFonts, the playback quality from the built-in synthesizer can be improved.

TuxGuitar can reproduce many effects that are relevant for the guitar (about Palm Mute, Bending, Hammer-on/Pull off, slide, vibrato, and accents ). Since version 1.1, each instrument track can have two votes, so instruments such as accordion or piano, played with both hands, can be recorded in one track. In version 1.2 a function for transposing individual tracks or the whole music piece was inserted.

TuxGuitar uses a proprietary file format; File Formats Guitar Pro, Power Tab and TablEdit however also supported. Furthermore, it is possible to export the songs as ASCII tablature as a MIDI files in MusicXML format, as a PDF file or as a source for LilyPond.
