Tuynhuys

The Tuynhuys ( German: Garden House ) in Cape Town is adjacent to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, the official residence of the President of South Africa. The house is located between the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and the President's Council in the Company's Garden. It's been more than 250 years the seat of the highest political authority in the country and was the residence of most Dutch, Batavian and British administrators and governors of the Cape Colony. South Africa's prime ministers and presidents reside here since 1961.

History

The Tuynhuys was built in 1674 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC ) as a device for the house in 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck -scale dance companies Tuyn ( Company's Garden ). The conversion to the guest house was from 1682 by Governor Simon van der Stel. Renovations and extensions were made to 1751st From this time the governors used the house as a summer residence, making it as ' Het Huys Governiurs in de dance companies Tuyn " ( The governor's house in the Companie Garden ) was known from 1790. After the second British occupation in 1806 it was called the " Government House ". Governor Lord Charles Somerset extended the house on both sides of a ballroom, a staircase and fireplaces. The house should also serve as a guest of the royal family.
