Tveit

Tveit is a village and a former municipality in Vest-Agder Fylke in Norway. Today it belongs to the commune Kristiansand South Coast. In Tveit is the Kristiansand airport. Tveit is located on the east side of the river Tovdalselva - also known as Topdalselva. To the city center of Kristiansand about 18 km to the southwest. The population is 1,418 inhabitants ( 2009). The size is 1.35 km2, making 1050 inhabitants, there are a km2. The highest point is at 1,011 m. The postal code is 4658 Tveit.

Name

The Commune - originally a parish - was named after the old farm Tveit ( Old Norse: Þveit ) there stood the first church. The name is identical with the word " Þveit ", which means " a grubbed-up area in the woods ." The name changed over the centuries Tved (1801 ), Thvet (1865) and Tveid (1900 ) to the present Tveit.

History

Tveit was founded on 1 January 1838 as the local authority (see formannskapsdistrikt ). On January 1, 1965, the municipalities Tveit, Oddernes, Randesund and Kristiansand were merged to a larger community.

The ancestors of the former U.S. Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey (1911-1978) came from Tveit. In the church of Tveit a plaque commemorating the visit depends on the Humpreys.

Sports

In Tveit is a ski center and the football club Tveit IL. For sport fishing is possible on Tovdalselva river salmon fishing.
