The Tver Oblast (Russian Тверская область / Tverskaya oblast ) is an oblast in the north- west of the Central Federal Region. From 1935 to 1990, she was named in honor of the eponymous Soviet politician as Kalinin Oblast.

The oblast is situated in the East European Plain and includes the Valdai Hills. Numerous lakes, including the Lake Seliger (Russian озеро Селигер / Ozero Seliger ), are in their area, and the upper reaches of the Volga. Almost 50% of the area is forested.

Many roads pass through the oblast, including the route Moscow - St Petersburg and the Moscow -Riga connection.

History

The favorable geographical location made the principality of Tver during the times of the Kievan Rus to an influential trade region. After the emergence of St. Petersburg, the area played an important role as a stopover on the way from one capital to another.

Administrative divisions and cities

The oblast is divided into seven city districts and 36 Rajons. The city of circles are the five largest cities, as well as two " Closed settlements" ( SATO ) formed ( Osjorny and Solnetschny ).

The main cities in addition to the administrative center of the oblast and only large city of Tver are Rzhev and Wyschni Wolotschok. In total there are 23 cities in the oblast and 28 urban-type settlements.

Policy

Governor of the Oblast was since December 2003 Dmitri Selenin. In June 2011 he was released early. To his provisional successor Andrei Shevelyov was appointed.

Economy

Among the major sectors of the economy was the textile industry. Also, the peat played a role. Today, the region is active mainly in the sectors of agriculture and metalworking. As one of the largest companies subject to the wagon building Tver, where modern trains for Moscow and other areas are made.

Also, energy plays a major role in the area. In the city Konakovo there is a hydroelectric power plant that not only Tver, but also partly Moscow power. Another traditional manufacturing sector is the chemical industry.
