Twice-Told Tales

Twice - Told Tales is a collection of short prose by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The first volume appeared in 1837, a second in 1842. The final version, supplemented by a preface, was published in 1851. In 1852 German was a selection titled Twice told tales out, a full translation is still pending. Some of the stories are, however, in unitary translations.

Publication history

The most collected in Twice - Told Tales short stories and literary sketches were previously appeared anonymously in various newspapers, magazines and almanacs as the Salem Gazette, The New - England Magazine or The token only with the publication of the first volume 1837 Hawthorne was as its author to be recognized.

Some of the stories originally created as part of earlier written narrative cycles. Neither Seven Tales of My Native Land ( written around 1826-27 ) nor for Provincial Tales ( for 1828-1830 ) was a publisher Hawthorne and eventually destroyed most of the manuscripts. Though his third collection The Storyteller was published from November 1834 continuously in the New England Magazine, but after the magazine had changed hands in 1835, the publication was not completed as planned. This work is lost in its entirety. The Twice - Told Tales are the first successful publication of Hawthorne's under his own name.

A full translation is still pending. Most stories are true in unitary translations, but are scattered over various anthologies, which are predominantly only available second hand available. One of the most comprehensive and also the only one that also provides a translation of the preface of the Twice - Told Tales ( by Hans -Joachim Lang), is:
