Twillingate

Twillingate is a small city on two adjacent islands off the north coast of Newfoundland. The city's name has its origin in the French island group Toulinquet. Twillingate is located at the mouth of the Exploits River in the Notre Dame Bay.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the bay was probably used as a seasonal fishing port. However, the first European settlers arrived in the 17th century. The original inhabitants, the Beothuk were established until the beginning of the 19th century in the region. About two centuries was Twillingate an important supply center for Labrador and the fishermen of Newfoundland's northern coast.

After the restriction of fishing quotas in the early 1990 years, Twillingate focused on tourism as a source of income. With iceberg and whale watching, the city has become a popular holiday and tourist destination.
