Twitch (device)

The Twitch is a tool to make horses with treatment by a veterinarian or other person less sensitive to pain. The nose brake consists of a handle (usually made of wood) with a rope loop attached to it. The loop is placed around the upper lip of the horse and then tangling up by the handle. The resulting slight contusion of the upper lip of the horse in the brain leads to the release of endorphins and thus the suppression of pain stimuli.

Another design is made entirely of metal and is similar in appearance to a large, pincer-like nutcrackers.

The Twitch has described as " Ross brake" found its way into some coats of arms.
