Tylman van Gameren

Tylman van Gameren (also Tilman Gameren, Tylman z Gameren, Tylman Gamerski ) (* 1632 in Utrecht, † 1706 in Warsaw) was a Polish architect and engineer of Dutch origin.

Life

Trained as a pupil of Jacob van Campen, he went to Italy for further training soon. There he met 1660 the Polish Prince Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski, who won it as a civil engineer for its fortifications. He first began a military career as an artillery officer, but soon worked for the Polish court of King Michał Korybut Wiśniowieckis and its successor, John III. Sobieski. As court architect he built within thirty years, numerous castles, churches, estates and parks, especially in and around Warsaw. As a representative of a classical flow, he became one of the chief architects of the Baroque in Central and Northern Europe. Except about 70 buildings he left behind many books and drawings, some of which were destroyed in World War II at his death.
