Tymfi

View from the west side in the summer

The Tymfi (Greek Τύμφη spoken Timfi; alternative name: Gamila, Greek Γκαμήλα ) is a mountain massif in the northern Pindos Mountains in Greek Epirus with a maximum height of 2497 m. The main peak of Tymfi massif is referred habitually as Gamila (I).

The Tymfi is located northeast of the city of Ioannina, northwest of Metsovo and south-west of Konitsa. The massif is bordered by river valleys in the north, west, east and south. In the north, the valley of the Aoös separates the Tymfi massif from Smolikas massif. The further to the east and southeast valley extending to the sources of Aoös (O Pigon reservoir) north of Metsovo is also the border of the Massif Tymfi in these directions. In the northwest of the Tymfi massif rivers Aoös and Sarandaporos flow at Konitsa together and continue in a westerly direction, the Tymfi massif is bounded thereby to the north. In the west, near the villages of Mikro Papingo and Klidona the river Voidomatis coming from the southeast, empties into the Aoös. The valley of the Voidomatis is the Vikos Gorge, which limits the Tymfi massif to the west, southwest and south. The valley is one of the deepest gorges in the world due to its width - depth ratio. In the village of Kipi the valley of the river Voidomatis pivoted to east -northeast, passing in this direction, the village Tsepelevo, the administrative seat of the municipality Tymfi. This part of the Voidomatis valley or the Vikos Gorge forms the southern and south-eastern border of the Massif Tymfi.

The Tymfi massif, in addition to its main peak Gamila I with 2497 m also a number of neighboring peaks. Directly west of the main summit is Ploskos ( 2377 m), southeast Gamila II ( 2480m ), Karteros ( 2478 m), Tsouka Rossa ( 2377 m), Megala Litharia ( 2467 m), stoma or Goura ( 2460 m) and Korifoula or Tsoumako ( 2157 m). In the northeast of the side peaks Lapates ( 2251 m) is located immediately south of Konitsa, which is separated from the main chain in alignment northwest to southeast through the valley. In this valley there is a high mountain ( Drakolimni Tymfis ).

Separately in the southwest of the main chain and from the latter by a high valley is in the form of a square pointed questions at the northern tip of the side peak Astrakas ( 2486 m ) to the southwest Kalogeros ( 2,112 m ). On the southwest side of the square form pointed questions from northwest to southeast the summit points Psarovotano (1787 m), Alogomandria, Makrirachi and Valtenissi the peak points of the northeast boundary of the Vikos gorge with the river Voidomatis. The side peak Spirokapa (1970 m) and Gaidoura (1927 m ) form the northern side of the Vikos Gorge after the course change towards the east in the direction of the source of Voidomatis on the southwestern slope of Tymfi backbone.

The entire Tymfi massif, especially its southern boundary by means of the Vikos Gorge, is part of the Vikos - Aoos National Park. In the Vikos - Aoos National Park and thus also in Tymfi massif are still brown bears to be found.

In the west and north, the National Road 20 ( European Route 90) passes the Tymfi Massif from southwest to northeast (Ioannina to Kozani ).
