MacWhirr captain and his crew sail on the steamer Nan- Shan, on behalf of a British shipping company, but under the flag of Siam, the China Sea. On one trip, the ship is caught in a typhoon, and the sailors are fighting for survival. The situation is complicated by the fact that the Nan- Shan has a group of Chinese coolies on board who are struggling in the dark and stormy steerage to their savings silver dollars falling out of the shattering sea chests. It succeeds MacWhirr and his men to restore order and the Nan- Shan, though difficult drawn to bring into the harbor.
