Typology (urban planning and architecture)

Under typology or house typology refers to the assignment of buildings to groups that differ according to their morphology or use.

Principle and meaning

With the typology a group-wise assignment of structures is due distinguishable essentials of their architecture. The city as a collection of different Gebäudeindividualitäten can be divided on the basis of these buildings; very roughly into large and small, flat and high and very fine in houses with large and small windows.

Meaningful distinctions provide information about the typology and thus about the benefits and the use of a particular building form. Certain peculiarities turn out in the distinction, for example, distinctions based on content and expression or form and expression in accordance with the site or use. Differentiation of group characteristics that identify these types, resulting in a catalog, which is useful as a repertoire for an urban design.
