Tyro

Tyro (Greek Τυρώ ) In Greek mythology, the daughter of Elis King Salmoneus and Alkidike. She was the wife of Cretheus, the founder of Iolcus, and bore him three sons Aeson, Pheres and Amythaon.

Before marriage Tyro loved but secretly the river god Enipeus. To seduce her, then took Poseidon to the shape of Enipeus and begat with the deluded Tyro the twins Pelias and Neleus. According to Aristotle's Poetics she put the children into a boat; they were found and raised by a horse herders. According to another version she put the child on the top of a mountain, and they were raised by a virgin.

Sophocles wrote a tragedy about the fate of the Tyro.
