Tyrrell County, North Carolina

Tyrrell County is the smallest county in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Columbia, which had been founded in 1700 as a trading post.

Geography

The County is located in Eastern North Carolina, is located in the north about 80 miles from Virginia and has an area of 1555 square kilometers, of which 545 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pasquotank County, Camden County, Currituck County, Dare County, Hyde County, Washington County and Perquimans County.

Tyrrell County is divided into five townships: Alligator, Columbia, Gum Neck, Scuppernong and South Fork.

History

Tyrrell County was formed in 1729 from parts of Bertie County, Chowan County, Currituck County and Pasquotank County. It was named after John Tyrrell, one of the early landowners.
