Tysfjorden

The Tysfjorden (Norwegian Tysfjorden, Lule Divtasvuodna ) is a fjord in the northern Norwegian municipality Tysfjorden kommune in Nordland, extending from the inner part of the Vestfjord south. The fjord is 59 km (32 nautical miles ) long (from Korsnes to Hellmobotn ) and Hulløya 897 m deep. Its main tributaries are Beisfjord, Fuglfjord, Grunnfjord, Hellmofjord, Indre Tysfjorden, man Fjord, Stefjord and Tømmeråsfjord. The Norwegian name is derived from the Sami word divtas. The second part of word vuodna means " fjord ".

Geography

The Tysfjorden has its estuary south of the island Baroya and north of Korsnes. It is the easternmost tributary of the Vestfjord. The Bremneset peninsula lies with the transition between the Vest Fjord and the Ofotfjord.

The length of the fjord can be defined in two different ways:

Fjords

The Tysfjorden has eight side arms. From the North East:

  • Stefjord ( 16 km long)
  • Tømmeråsfjord (5 km)
  • Fuglfjord (4.5 km). This branches off at the widest part of the Tysfjords and is also called Haukøyfjord.

Next on the east side follow:

  • Indre Tysfjorden (17 miles)
  • Man Fjord (12.8 miles)
  • Grunnfjord (15 km).

On the west side:

  • Beisfjord (4,5 km ).

To the south, as an extension of Tysfjords:

  • Hellmofjorden (31 km). This is even two kilometers longer than the main fjord.

Skrovkjosen is a large and striking bay, which branches off eight kilometers east of the confluence with the Tysfjorden from Hellmofjord.

Islands

Hulløya between the Kjøpsviksund and Hulløysund is the largest island in Tysfjorden with an area of 22 km ². The southwest lies the much smaller island Litl - Hulløya (approx. 0.8 km ²). Haukøyholmen with about 1.3 km ², the largest island in the Haukøyfjord. The island Bekkenesholmen with a nature reserve in the Skrovkjosen is about 0.4 km ².

Environment

The area on the west side of Tysfjords there is relatively little forested mountains and hills, with a number of lakes between the Beisfjorden and drag. Bogvetten is 521 m, the highest point north of Storjord. South of Hellandsberg, when Hellmofjord, the landscape is almost directly into a coherent Fjellgebiet which extends almost the entire rest of Fjrodsystems to Valletendan at Bremneset outside the Ofotfjords. The most peaks over 700 m range there, some even more than 1000 m. There are scattered groups of houses in some isolated valleys, which rise from the fjord coast in the height. For example Hellmobotn and Mannfjordbotn have about 2 km ² flat land before the climb begins in the mountains. Kjøpsvik is Kjøpsnes clamped between the fjord and the 849 m high Lifjell. Stetind ( 1391m ), Norway Nationalfjell on Stefjord is the highest mountain in the vicinity of Tysfjords. For the most part, unsecured led Fjell and fjord landscape in the inner part and further east towards Sweden the establishment of a nature reserve has been proposed. This should extend from Sørfold in the south to the north Ballangen.

Colonization

With the exception of a few small hamlets, the entire population of the municipality Tysfjorden, which amounts to nearly 2000 persons have been settled in around the fjord. The community center Kjøpsvik located on the east side. The Tätort drag and place the smaller Storjord act on Beisfjord as local centers for the west side of the fjord, especially Hellandsberg south of drag and Korsnes north of Storjord. South of Kjøpsvik is the place Storå. Musken, the middle of the Hellmofjord, seen as the only locationN in Norway, a purely Lule - Sami population has .. Hellmobotn, Grunnfjordbotn, man fjords and some farms and hamlets along the fjords are depopulated today.

Traffic

  • Three important ferry crossing the Tysfjorden or have this as a starting point:
  • A speedboat combines some roadless hamlet on Tysfjorden and its fjords ( Nevervika, Storå above Hulløya ) with Kjøpsvik and drag.
  • The Regional Road 681 ( Fylkesvei ) leads from the E 6 5 km to the north to Korsnes.
  • The Regional Road 682 ( Fylkesvei ) leads from the E 6 5 km to the south of drag until after Hellandsberg.
  • The Regional Road 683 ( Fylkesvei ) leads from the E 6 5 km to the east along the Beisfjord.
  • A local road leads from the regional road 683 south to Nevervika.
  • The Regional Road 684 ( Fylkesvei ) leads from Kjøpsvik 8 km from north to Hundholmen and Kjelkvika.
  • The streets between the E6 and Eidet on the east side of Skrovkjosen and between the N 827 and Haukøya along the Tømmeråsfjord.
  • The roads between Storå and Tørrnes and between Tjårrnes and Råna that are not connected with other roads.

History

  • In order to make the road passable to Korsnes, the ferry service was opened after Skarberget 1941. 1942, the ferry terminal was moved to Bognes.
  • The ferry between drag and Kjøpsvik opened in 1968 and went in 1992 in the delta connection, which also included Skarberget on.

Polar web

During the German occupation in World War II alternatives for the routing of the Polar web were tested towards Narvik: A train ferry between Korsnes and Skarberget or a spiral tunnel at Hellmobotn that would ermöglichst a ferry -free connection.

Free ferry E6

Traffic shares the default Tysfjorden Norway into two parts. The ferry service between Bognes and Skarberget is the only remaining ferry on the E6. The only ferry free -pass options through Sweden. The following solutions have been proposed:

In the last study, which has been made for the area, five possible concepts were examined, including a 13 km long undersea tunnel or a bridge 3 km link between the areas around Bognes and Skarberget. A new road route that leads south to drag and four bridges connecting the N827 has also been proposed. The study was in 2012 transferred to the Norwegian Ministry of Transport, Public Roads Administration with recommendations of the Statens to maintain, improve and as short as possible, while the N827 connection can be weakened to obtain a more local function with re-deployment at a regional road connecting the current E6 connection. The time horizon for this analysis goes up to 2040, which means that the desire for a free ferry E6 will probably not be realized in the near future.

Tourism

  • Whale, Eagle and northern lights safari.
  • Diving.
  • Caving in of the deepest cave in northern Europe, Råggejávrrerájgge.
  • Hellmobotn is a popular starting point for cross-country skiers, with marked trails, among other things lead to Sweden.
  • The trail Grenseleden (Swedish Gränsleden ) with the starting point at Bosvik is a marked trail, which was formerly used as a trade route and during World War II as an escape route to Sweden.
