The U-Tapao Airport ( Thai: ท่าอากาศยาน นานาชาติ อู่ ตะเภา พัทยา, U Tapao Pattaya International Airport, IATA code: UTP, ICAO code: VTBU ) is a civilian airport and military airfield of the Royal Thai Navy ( RTN), in the province of Rayong.
History
Construction of the airport was in 1961 after the Royal Thai Navy had the financial aspects reviewed and approved. The completion took almost 4 years later in 1965.
In the second Indochina war Utapao was used alongside the Royal Thai Navy of the United States air base for operations of the KC -135 tanker aircraft (as of 1966) and the B -52 long-range bombers (from 1967).
The first civilian air carrier that uses the airport until today, Bangkok Airways. There were also flights to Bangkok - Don Mueang Airport.
Location
Utapao airport is located about 40 km west of Rayong district Amphoe Ban Chang, Rayong province. After Pattaya, there are also about 40 km.
General
The airport is used regularly for scheduled flights to Phuket ( city) and Samui, further, it is used as a cargo airport and flown by charter aircraft to relieve the Bangkok airport.
The airport has one runway, a taxiway, a 43 -acre apron and a terminal. The apron provides parking for 49 aircraft. The terminal has a total area of 2,610 square meters and be able to handle about 400 passengers per hour. Is headed to the airport by Rear Admiral Sorracha Sornpratum and his deputy, Rear Admiral Surapong Ayasanond.

Alternative airport
Utapao airport is the official alternate airport for Bangkok.
When the two airports in Bangkok were occupied in late 2008 by the PAD protesters, several international flights were conducted alternatively assigned Utapao. Given the inadequate handling facilities, this led to chaotic conditions.
