U.S. Route 218

U.S. Highway 218 is a 513 km long in north-south direction extending highway through the middle of the United States. Highway 218 is one of the original furnishings in 1926 highways. Although the numbering would mean 218, that it would be a bypass road for U.S. Highway 18, the two highways overlap only 13 km at Charles City and then separate again.

The southern terminus of Highway 218 is at the junction with U.S. Highway 136 in the center of Keokuk in the southeast corner of Iowa. The northern end is the common junction with U.S. Highway 14 in the Interstate 35 on the southern edge of Owatonna in southern Minnesota.

Iowa

Highway 218 is numbered on its course through Iowa to a large extent congruent with the Avenue of the Saints, in Iowa as Iowa Highway 27.

The southern terminus of Highway 218 is at the junction with U.S. Highway 136 in the center of Keokuk at the intersection of Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. As Main Street Highway 218 runs through the entire city, to the north-west edge of Keokuk is a 9 km long common history with U.S. Highway 61 begins to the north. After both highways have separated again, now leads the Highway 218 to the northwest.

South of the Highway 218 Donnellson meets for the first time on Iowa Highway 27 ( Avenue of the Saints) and now runs with this together in a northerly direction. On the eastern edge of Mount Pleasant crossing of U.S. Highway 34 and Highway 218 continues north. At Iowa City the Highway 218 passes as southwestern tangent and crosses successively the Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 6 now leads the Highway 218 and Interstate 380 north to exit the common route to the west on the southern edge of Cedar Rapids. At the same time meets the Highway 218 to U.S. Highway 151 and U.S. Highway 30, the road for the next 30 km to the west now leads together.

After the Highway 218 leaves the common route north to later turn right at Vinton west again and again a few kilometers to the north. On the southwestern outskirts of Waterloo, the highway meets 218 again on Interstate 380 and to the coextending with these U.S. Highway 20 The road now leads through the center of Waterloo, where U.S. Highway 63 crosses and then in a northwesterly direction to the northern edge of Cedar Falls. Front there the Highway 218 north again.

At Charles City Highway 218 meets U.S. Highway 18 and extends 13 km along with this. After the Highway 218, the common route leaves again in a northerly direction. After some right-angled bends in a northerly and westerly direction of Highway 218 reaches the border between the states of Iowa and Minnesota.

Minnesota

From the south of Highway 218 reaches the eastern outskirts of Austin, forming the eastern ring road of the city. At the regional airport of Austin Highway leads into Interstate 90 runs along the northern outskirts of a few kilometers to the west with this together. A little later the common route and Highway 218 ends turn to the north.

The Highway 218 now leads through a series of small towns in the north, before it flows on the southeast edge of Owatonna in the U.S. Highway 14 and runs together with this westward. 5 km of Highway 218 reaches its northern terminus at the junction with Interstate 35

Officially, the Highway 218 is on the section in Minnesota according to Minnesota Statutes § 161 114 ( 2) as Route 40 reported.

History

1913, the road was built, which is recognized today as the nation's Highway 218. The present road was first called Red Ball route as it was marked with boundary posts, which were provided with red balls at the top. 1920, the section by Minnesota as Constitutional Route 40 has been designated by the official road numbering of the State of Minnesota.

In 1934, the Iowa Highway 218 was extended from its former southern end at U.S. Highway 30 to its current endpoint in Keokuk.
