U6 (Vienna U-Bahn)

The underground line U6 belongs to the network of the Vienna U -Bahn and connects the southern 23rd district Liesing with the northern district Floridsdorf 21. The route leads mostly along the Vienna belt. With 24 stations and a total length of 17.4 kilometers, it is the longest metro line in Vienna. She is the second metro line, which has reached the northern bank of the Danube since 1996. The average travel time between the two terminal stations Siebenhirten and Floridsdorf is 34 minutes. Your core track with the in the 1980s lavishly renovated stations along the western belt was built in the late 19th century and is therefore one of the oldest parts of the Vienna U- Bahn network, while the northern and southern external routes only built in the 1990s were.

At peak times in the morning and in the afternoon every second train is lead from / to Alterlaa on working days. This is due on the one hand the low utilization of the southern U6, on the other hand, the parking hall, which is located in Alterlaa. This is the U6, in addition to the U2, one of two subway lines, whose features do not always go to the last stop. Other features of U6 are that it runs above ground and underground longer than that it will not run on electricity rail, but with catenary. The U6 is also annually the busiest subway line Vienna with nearly 130 million passengers. Your signal color is ocher brown.

Course

From Siebenhirten Längenfeldgasse

The U6 starts in high position at the station Siebenhirten in the 23rd district, Liesing. From there it runs parallel to Triesterstraße or Altmannsdorferstraße north. The following are the stations Perfektastraße and Erlaaer road before the station Alterlaa is achieved. Here there is a parking and servicing hall. In rush hours, every second train starts here. After the station Alterlaa the line will head to the northeast and crosses the Altmannsdorferstraße and the Altmannsdorfer road Südosttangente. The following are the stations at the pumping station and Tscherttegasse. According to the latter, there is a crossover from the U6 to Badnerbahn before the path disappears into a tunnel. It follows the first underground Station Meidling. From here the route runs parallel to the main road to the station Meidlinger Niederhofstrasse. Then the line will head to the east and reaches the station Längenfeldgasse which extends parallel to the River Wien. Here it is possible to switch to the line U4.

From Längenfeldgasse to spittelau

After Längenfeldgasse station, the route goes back to high position above and swings back towards the north, cross the bridge over the line, the line Vienna and the Wien River and finally reached the station Gumpendorferstraße in high position. Following the route runs in low position of the belt. It follows the underground station Westbahnhof and the Burggasse -Stadthalle in deep level before the route gradually ascends. The next stop Thalia Street is located approximately at street level; it does not have the classic rail design, since it was not built until 1980. The stations Josefstädterstraße and Alserstraße located on the railway arches. Before the next station Michelbeuern the track drops back to street level. There is also the operating station on the U6 line. Following the path rises again to the railway arches and follows the belt further to the stations Währingerstraße - Volksoper and Nußdorferstraße. Following the line will head east and reached the station spittelau where it can be switched to S -Bahn, regional trains and the line U4.

From spittelau to Floridsdorf

After crossing the U6 station spittelau the Danube Canal and disappears into a tunnel. The following are the underground stations Hunter Street and Dresdner Straße. After that, the route rises out of the tunnel and reached high position in the next Handelskai. Here it can be switched to the lines of the S- Bahn route and for suburban line S45. The U6 crosses following the Danube and the New Danube on its own bridge, parallel to the northern railway bridge. Following is the Neue Donau station, right in the recreation area Danube Island, before the path disappears into a tunnel and reached the railhead Floridsdorf.

History

Trunk route

In the middle part of the track, also called main line, the U6 runs along the route of the former belt line of the Vienna city railway, which was opened in 1898 as a steam train. She led from the station Meidling main road to the station Heiligenstadt. Later, a compound bow the Danube channel line from the station to the station was built Nußdorferstraße Peace Bridge. 1925, the route was taken over and electrified by the City of Vienna.

In the course of underground construction in the 1970s, the belt was not initially involved and remained as light rail. In 1980, the new station Thalia Street was built. Finally, it was decided but also to incorporate the belt into the U- Bahn network. From 1985, the trains of the waistline wrong heading south only to the station Gumpendorferstraße.

South of the Wientalquerung the old branch was torn from the Wiental and rebuilt. At this point the Längenfeldgasse station was built as a new node between U4 and U6. From this a new tunnel route to Station Meidling was built. The ground under the telecommunications office Meidling between Niederhofstrasse and Arndtstrasse was frozen with cold calcium chloride brine to minimize settling, especially a non-uniform decrease in the foundations.

1987 also the new station was opened at Michelbeuern General Hospital. On 7 October 1989, the extended route was first used as U6 and it led from Meidling to Nußdorferstraße and thence alternately on to the Holy City or the Peace Bridge. Thus the Wiener Stadtbahn was finally history. In 1990, the route of the U6 in the area of West Station swung further in the course of building the line U3 to the east and a new underground station Westbahnhof built between the belt surfaces. As early as 1991, work began on the extension of the U6 to Floridsdorf and the road to peace bridge was adjusted.

Foreign branches

In the 1970s, the fast tram line 64 was built, which led to Siebenhirten from the Westbahnhof. Until Meidling she used the existing tram network. From there they went short on the track of the local train and chain after Wienerbergstraße on today's U6 line from. She led as " Premetro " on a viaduct on to Siebenhirten. In 1983 started the construction of the tunnel to the Station Meidling. The southern part includes not only the two side running tunnels, an additional tunnel for a return track. All three were built in NATM construction. The railroad tracks were crossed in an open design, for which a number of temporary bridges made of steel for the heavy rail traffic were used. In 1995, the high route to Siebenhirten was connected to the new tunnel and switched to underground operation. The U6 was prolonged to seven shepherds.

A year later, the new northern branch was opened by the station Nußdorferstraße to Floridsdorf and simultaneously set the old route to the Holy City. As part of this extension, the spittelau stations along the Franz Josef Railway and the U4 and Handelskai station were built on the S- Bahn route.

In the 1980s, the plans envisaged also a variant which would have led via U4 Peace Bridge and S-Bahn station Traisengasse to Floridsdorf the U6. However, this idea has been discarded in the course of time.

At present, no further expansion of the U6 is planned. However, it is repeatedly called for an extension to Stammersdorf the north and to the Shopping City Süd in the south. Realistically would only be an extension of Floridsdorf to the under construction North Hospital in the foreseeable future.

Presence

The stations Gumpendorferstraße, castle street, Josefstädterstraße Alserstrasse Währingerstraße and Nußdorferstraße are still preserved almost in its original state of the architecture of Otto Wagner. There were only extended the platforms and installed lifts.

In summer 2011, the first time a route for a long time has been set in the history of the Vienna U -Bahn. From mid- July to late August, the U6 Westbahnhof line - Alserstraße was locked. This was due to the renovation of the subway station Josefstädterstraße, which also made a passing through the station impossible. As a replacement tram special line "E" has been set up, which ran between Westbahnhof and Nußdorferstraße. Since August 29, 2011, on line U6 again on the entire route, the station Josefstädterstraße remained until November 25, 2011 locked, the restoration work is still ongoing until 2013.

On 5 October 2013, the station was renamed Philadelphia bridge Meidling. This was an approximation to the designation of the ÖBB railway station.

Stations

Today U6 has developed over a period of several decades, some of its stations are significant for their time and also have architectural value.

The belts stretch of U6 is part of the old town train as it was designed by Otto Wagner. In this project up to seventy employees were temporarily incorporated under the direction of Joseph Maria Olbrich. The plans included substructure, building construction ( retaining walls, bridges, tunnel portals, viaducts, stations ) and details ( railings, grilles, gates, furniture, lighting twill, etc. ) of all rail lines. It emerged after six years of construction alongside viaducts, bridges and galleries also ( at today's U6) six stations that are held in a transitional style between late historicism and Art Nouveau. These stations are now all under preservation order, the stations are on a belt instead of gates of Linienwall. With the exception of the stations castle alley and Westbahnhof they are designed as elevated railway stations. They are massive, classicizing structure with corner pylons and pylon -like corner projections. The inputs are in the middle of the building and are usually marked with Doric columns. The underground railway stations ( of which there are only the station Burggasse are on the U6, the original station Westbahnhof has not survived ), are simple gate buildings, the main accent is on perforated metal pillars supporting grid structure over the entrances.

Architecturally notable are furthermore the Stations of the Südastes, which was completed in 1995. While a run as elevated railway tram line was adapted, with the exception of station Alterlaa but completely new station buildings were erected. These are the stations ( from south to north ): Siebenhirten Perfektastraße, Erlaaer road, Am Schöpfwerk and Tscherttegasse. Also, the operating station Rößlergasse is dazuzuzählen here. The plans were begun by Johann Georg Gsteu 1990 - at that time the technical planning was essentially complete. Gsteu made himself a new technique of deformation of aluminum trapezoidal sheet (called Pull- ) advantage, which allowed the construction of differently shaped arches. In combination with blue glazed concrete and glass results in a distinctive signal effect. A particularly striking element is the rounded top lift towers.

Fleet

On the U6 operate vehicles other than on the lines U1- U4. Reason for this is that with the conversion of light rail on subway in 1989 only changed the name, but no adaptation of the track was performed on operation with power rail or train control. The system with tram-like vehicles, optical signals and operating with the top line was taken over by the tram. The light rail vehicles of types E6 and c6 wrong now on the U6. In the vernacular, this line is therefore often referred to today as light rail. 1995 new low-floor vehicles of type T were procured. These perverted only in conjunction with the older high-floor vehicles, so that there was a low-floor cars in each train. Later, pure T- trains were used. Since 2008 is a further development of this type as T1 used. A train is made up of four T or T1 car. It may also T and T1 cars are used in combination. End of 2008, the old rail car types E6 and c6 were retired. Since the run on the U6 only more low-floor vehicles of the types T and T1.

Right next to the station Michelbeuern is the same operating station on the U6 line. This was built in 1927 and already used by the light rail. South of the station Alterlaa the Abstellanlage Rößlergasse was built in 1994.
