Uchiko (Ehime)

Uchiko (Japanese :内 子 町; -chō ) is a municipality in the district of Kita-gun (喜 多 郡) in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku in Japan.

The municipality (町) existed in its current form since January 1, 2005, the three municipalities Uchiko- chō, Ikazaki -chō (五十 崎 町) and Oda -chō (小田 町) were merged. She counted in March 2006 together 20.455 inhabitants 299.5 km ² and a population density of 68 inhabitants per km ².

Uchiko is located in the mountains of Ehime Prefecture, about 40 km southwest of the capital of the prefecture Matsuyama. Three rivers flow through the community: the Oda, the Nakayama and the Fumoto. The soil is very fertile, crops are mainly tobacco and fruits such as sweet Kakifeigen and Japanese pears. Since Uchiko has little flat land, agricultural farms are located mostly along river banks, on hills and mountain slopes. Throughout the different seasons, the area offers Uchiko with its charming landscape, the wooded hills and tranquil valleys its residents in addition to the economic source of revenue recovery. During the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji period (1868-1912) flourished in the Uchiko Japanese paper and wax production and the city great wealth. During this time, the district Yōkaichi and Gokoku, still remember their historic buildings at the time of the economic boom created. The wooden, two-storey and white or cream-colored stucco houses of the merchants with their decorative walls and the wing-like eave form an approximately 600 m long row of houses, which hints at many traces of the past splendor Uchiko today. 1975 called the city Uchiko a campaign to conserve the road into life, and introduced in 1982 the Japanese government, the old town Uchiko with about 70 preserved houses a historical monument.
