History

Uckfield is first mentioned in records in the late 13th century. The town grew from a stopping point for pilgrims from Canterbury, Chichester and Lewes. The pilgrims crossed the river here and bought food in a defunct inn in the still existing Pudding Cake Lane. The oldest house in Uckfield today is Bridge Cottage from the 15th century and is now a museum.

Due to its location on the River Uck parts of the city are repeatedly affected by flooding. The recent floods were in the years 1989, 1994, 2000 and 2007. Since 2010 a flood wall protects a portion of the low-lying city center.
