Udet U 12

The Udet U 12 "Flamingo" was a popular German sports and trainer aircraft of the 1920s and 1930s.

History

Hans Henry Herrmann, chief designer and partner of Udet Flugzeugbau GmbH in Munich, designed the U 12 as einstieligen braced biplane wood construction with a rectangular fuselage cross-section. When driving a 7- cylinder radial engine, Siemens - Halske Sh.11 served with 96 hp. Later, a stronger Siemens - Halske Sh.14 " was still - Engine installed.

The successful first flight, with Ernst Udet in the cockpit, took place at Easter 1925. Soon after, the series production in Munich- Ramer village began. In 1926 the company was taken over Udet because of financial difficulties of the Bavarian Aircraft Works, but began production of the "Flamingo" in Augsburg again. The largest holder of "Flamingo" in Germany were the branches of DVS in Schleißheim, Brunswick and Warnemünde. But in other flight schools enjoyed the "Flamingo" popularity. The most famous "Flamingo" was the red D822 Ernst Udet. With this he flew at various airshows in Germany and Austria, but also in the USA.

In Austria, only a few were built in Germany, "Flamingo" is used. Most used there "Flamingo" were built in Austria as U U 12O and 12S under license.

In Hungary flew both built in Germany, U 12, as well as Manfréd white under license manufactured aircraft. Machines have been exported to Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, and China, Italy and Sweden. For the Baltic states, the company A / S Christine Backman had a license for reproduction in Riga.

A total of about 240 U 12 were produced, of which about 30 at Udet in Ramer village and 150 in the Bavarian Aircraft Works in Augsburg. The rest was built under license in other countries.

Aircraft received

On 17 December 2004 launched a replica of the Udet U 12 in Oberpfaffenhofen, who was temporarily exhibited in the flight Schleißheim.
