Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic

The Udmurt ASSR ( Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic ( RSFSR ) within the Soviet Union. It existed from 1934 until 1991. The area is located north of the lower Kama, is 42,100 square kilometers and is inhabited by about 1.7 million people. The capital was Izhevsk. The region is dominated by agriculture and forestry. But there are also mined iron and coal. The Udmurt people make up only about one-third of the population, nevertheless was and is the Udmurt language a second official language. Since 1991, the region is a part of the Udmurt Republic of Russia.
