Udmurt people

The Udmurt (deprecated also Votiaks, proper name удмурт ) is a Finno- Ugric people living to about 91 % in the Republic of Udmurtia. As of the 2002 census, approximately 637,000 people known to Udmurt nationality. The Udmurt people fall into the two main groups of Watka and Kalmes.

History

The the Komi related Udmurt were early on in close contact with the Volga Bulgars, whose influence has left its mark, especially in the language. In the 13th century it first came under Tatar rule until they were conquered by Ivan IV in 1552 Russia. The Russian rule and the consequent Christianization of the Udmurt people have resisted until the 18th century.

Language and Identity

Although 464,000 Udmurt people say they talk Udmurt, prevails in everyday life before the Russian. Meanwhile, however, also developed a Finno- Ugric udmurtisches national consciousness. Udmurt representatives be part of the Finno- Ugric World Congress.
