The Udon Thani Airport ( Thai: ท่าอากาศยาน นานาชาติ อุดรธานี; IATA: UTH, ICAO code: VTUD ) on the outskirts of the big city in the province of Udon Thani Udon Thani is the main airport in Northeast Thailand.

General

It has a partly paved and partly concreted start and runway with a length of 3,048 meters. Terminal 2 with passenger bridge was opened in 2006.

History

The bogus airline Air America CIA entertained here for decades their aviation hub and headquarters for Asia. During the Vietnam War the airport under the name " Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base " of the United States Air Force ( Pacific Air Forces) was used from 1964 to 1975. There was also a radio studio of AFTN.

On 8 February 2006, there were an international group skydiving with participants from 31 countries under the name of "the World Team ". Here the world record for the largest freefall formation in jumping from 400 people was achieved through the airport in Udon Thani.

Armed forces

There is also a military base of the Thai Air Force. The Royal Thai Air Force, where it maintains the "Wing 23, 2nd Air Division Air Combat Command ." On this base are 20 Alpha Jet A stationed. These were purchased cheaply by the Luftwaffe in 1999.
