Udupi ( Kannada: ಉಡುಪಿ Udupi [ uɖupi ]; also Udipi ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with around 125,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is located in the west of Karnataka on the coast of the Arabian Sea 56 km north of Mangalore. The city is the administrative center of the district of Udupi.

Location

By Udupi lead the National Highway 17 and the Konkan Railway, both of which follow the course of the west coast. Five kilometers to the east is the suburb Manipal, site of Manipal University. There are about six kilometers from the center Udupis to Malpe beach town.

Townscape and cultural

In Udupi is an important Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. He is said to have been founded in the 13th century by the Vaishnavite philosopher Madhvacharya and is now the center of going back to him Madhva sect. Attached to the temple are eight monasteries ( Maths ), which alternately manage the Krishna temple. In addition, Udupi is known for its cuisine. Throughout India there are " Udupi " restaurants that serve vegetarian Indian dishes like Dosa.

Udupi is a center for the region Tulu Nadu in the south west Karnataka characteristic and well-kept here only cultural tradition.
