Uebelmannia gummifera

Uebelmannia gummifera is a species of the genus Uebelmannia in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ).

Description

Uebelmannia gummifera grows with spherical to slightly elongated bodies that reach heights of growth of up to 10 centimeters and a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. In rare cases, short columnar and up to 40 centimeters high specimens found. Under the somewhat rough epidermis are conspicuous mucus passageways. The approximately 32 narrow ribs are initially tuberculate. The areoles located on it are grayish white. The single, gray central spines straight and slightly downwards. Of the three up to 5 mm long spines is a directed slightly downward.

The bright yellow flowers are up to 2 inches long and can reach a diameter of 1.5 centimeters. Yellowish green fruits are up to 8 mm in length and have a diameter of up to 6 millimeters.

Systematics, distribution and hazard

Uebelmannia gummifera is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the Serra de ambrosia and grows on quartz gravel. The first description as gummifera Parodia in 1950 by Curt Backeberg and Otto full. Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining she put 1967 in the genus Uebelmannia.

Uebelmannia gummifera be listed in Annex I of the CITES Convention. In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN 2002 she was described as " Vulnerable (VU) ," ie, endangered classified. In 2013, the species is considered " Endangered ( EN ) ', ie performed as endangered.
