Uecker

Uckerkanal at the bridge near Seehausen (Uckermark)

The Uecker ( Ucker ) is a good 98 km long lowland river with a 2200 km ² large catchment area. The languid, varied river carries in its part, the name Ucker Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the name of Uecker.

Name

The river's name is closely associated with the named after the river Slavic tribe of the Ukranen who had a fortified trading center on the castle wall island in Oberuckersee. The river 's name was originally pronounced with a long u, the ck served in the Low German (as opposed to High German ) for lengthening of the preceding vowel. After the versions " Ucker ", " Uecker " and " Uecker " were used temporarily equivalent, it has been agreed recently at the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy on the traditional names: Ucker on 's Brandenburg Uecker ( [ ʏkər ] ) on vorpommerschem area. The interpretation of the Slavic name is unclear waters: Earlier it was " the Fast " preferred today " the Meandering itself."

River

The Ucker rises near Old Temmen ( in the municipality of prying - Ringenwalde ) at an altitude of 69 meters above sea level and flows north. It crosses the Oberuckersee, continues to flow as the Uckerkanal over the Mollensee and by the Unteruckersee at Prenzlau. After about half-way, Ucker reached at Nieden Vorpommern and now turns out to be Uecker to Pasewalk. Between Pasewalk and the mouth of the Uecker mid-19th century was impounded. Passing Torgelow and Eggesin ( where the right opens the Randow ) runs the river on to Pomerania and ends in this eastern German port city in the Small Lagoon called western part of the Szczecin Lagoon ( Oderhaffs ), which is connected with the Baltic Sea.

Waterway

Today the Uecker has no more than waterway importance. Only the 2.66 km long estuary range of Uecker (Ue ) by the Uecker channel ( 95,81 km southwest edge of the road bridge in Ueckermuende to km 98.47 of the jetty ) is a federal waterway of class IV, on the maritime road rules apply. Responsible is the Waterways and Shipping Office Stralsund.

Thanks to its partly idyllic course it is a popular destination for canoeing. The total tour leads from Oberuckersee about 82 km and can be performed in 3 to 5 days.

However, the Uckerrinne also wanted the noble residents at the south end of the Oberuckersees, von Arnim on Suckow, use, partly for timber floating, partly for transporting bricks and fish. But that he came to Prenzlauer fishermen into the enclosure, which had leased the fishing rights of the Office Gramzow in Oberucker. Their best fish stocks were in power between Seehausen and Potzlow and would be in danger Arnim ships. 1716 promised the feudal lord to take on the fish times into consideration. But the resistance of the lease Fischer grew, as von Arnim (1751 ) its shipping and fishing had more and more extended.
