Ueli Maurer

Ueli Maurer [ uəli ] (born Ulrich Maurer, born December 1, 1950 in Wetzikon, hometown entitled in Adelboden and Hinwil ) is a Swiss politician ( SVP). He held the office of President of the Swiss Confederation in 2013. Since 1 January 2009, he has been a member of the Federal Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS).

Curriculum vitae

Maurer joined the compulsory education and the secondary school from Hinwil. He made a commercial apprenticeship and subsequently acquired the federal accountant diploma. From 1994 to 2008 he was managing director of the Zurich Farmers' Association. By the end of 2008 he was President of the Swiss vegetable producers and the Swiss machine ring. Mason lives in Wernetshausen ( Hinwil part of the community ), is married and has four sons and two daughters.

Political career

From 1978 to 1986, Maurer council of Hinwil. From 1983 to 1991 he was the cantonal parliament of Zurich, in his last year in office as President. Maurer was elected to the National Council in 1991. In the same year he lost the election in the Zurich cantonal government against Moritz Leuenberger. During his tenure as president of the SVP Switzerland from 1996 to 2008 twelve new cantonal parties as well as 600 local sections were established, while the SVP has established itself as voter strongest party in Switzerland.

On October 21, 2007 Maurer ran for one of two seats of the Canton of Zurich in the Senate, but failed in the first ballot. In the second ballot on 25 November 2007, he lost servant against the Green Liberal Verena.

On 26 October 2007 Maurer announced his resignation as party president of the SVP by March 2008. Toni Brunner was elected on 1 March 2008 as his successor. Mid August 2008 Maurer was elected president of the Zurich SVP.

Following the resignation of Councillor Samuel Schmid SVP Group Ueli Maurer nominated on 27 November 2008 alongside Christoph Blocher for the Federal Election 2008. On 10 December 2008 Mason was in the third ballot by only one vote ahead of explosives candidate Hansjörg Walter in the Federal selected. Since 2009, Maurer is head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS).

On December 5, 2012 Mason was elected with 148 of 237 possible and 202 valid votes for President in 2013.

Family

Little is known about mason private life. His family, he presented for the first time in public on the occasion of his reception as a newly elected Federal Council in his hometown Hinwil. His wife grew up in Ghana as the daughter of Swiss missionaries. They met in Seattle, where she worked as an au pair. He himself had been in the footsteps of his grandfather on the go who had once wanted in Alaska for gold.

From patriotic motives in his own words, he spends his holidays, mainly in Switzerland. Mason defends himself against the charge of racism:

" In our party there is no place for extremists. My wife was born in Ghana and grew up there as well. We have many dark-skinned friends, and in our house more couscous is eaten as raclette. "

Criticism

Prior to his nomination as Federal Maurer was within the SVP as a representative of the policy of "Zurich wing ". Thus, under his presidency, the controversial poster campaigns were published with subjects such as the stabber, the cross on the Swiss Pass brown hands, as well as the black sheep that is pushed by the national flag. Prior to the Federal election and after his election was feared by various quarters, he would roll change can not work within a collegial body. As a result, Mason had to be accused to challenge the party interests above the national interests.

Others

When Maurer was named in a discussion program on Tele 24 by Roger Schawinski as "party President Blocher of Grace," in 1999, he left the studio in front of cameras.

In June 2006, Maurer was indicted by Alfredo Lardelli for forgery. The accusations were found to be untenable, and Maurer was acquitted in November of the same year.

2013 Maurer was awarded the World Telecommunication and Information Society Award of the International Telecommunication Union ( ITU).
