Ugandan red colobus

Uganda Red Colobus ( Piliocolobus tephrosceles )

The Ugandan Red Colobus ( Piliocolobus tephrosceles ) is a primate of the group of colobus monkeys. He is recognized as a distinct species only in 2001.

Uganda colobus monkeys have a rotgraues fur that is darker on the back than on the belly. Striking is a bright red cap on the top of the head. The body is slim, as with all colobus monkeys, the tail is very long, the thumb is regressed

These primates live in eastern Africa, their range includes Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and western Tanzania. Their habitat is forests.

They are like all red colobus diurnal and arboreal. They live together in large groups, which are composed of several males, many females and the common offspring. The food of these animals consists of young leaves, fruits, seeds and stems.

The systematics within the genus of red colobus is controversial. The Ugandan Red Colobus is one of nine species, list the Wilson & Reeder ( 2005). Other sources believe the population with Piliocolobus pennantii or P. rufomitratus together. Also, the IUCN does not recognize the type, therefore no exact information on the degree of exposure are possible.
