Ugandi County

Ugandi (Latin Ugaunia, German outdated Ugaunien ) to 1224 was an historic kingdom and a landscape in the south of present-day Estonia.

The Ugandi region comprised probably the territories of present-day counties of Tartu, Põlva, Võru and partially Valga in southern Estonia. Ugandi had two centers: Tarbatu ( now Tartu ) and Otepaeae. The name Ugandi is first mentioned in the Chronicle of Henry of Latvia ( 1225-1227 ).

With the conquest and Christianization Tarbatus by the Teutonic Order in 1224 the native Estonian population Ugandis was Catholic. In the field the bishopric of Dorpat was founded in the same year.

From the Latin name Ugaunia the Latvian name derives Igaunija for Estonia.
